Crocheted Tote Bag

I am so proud of this bag! I designed the pattern myself, and the steps are listed below. You can also find it on Ravelry.

The first time I made it using jute twine. It looked great, but was so rough on my hands and hard to crochet with. Then I found a cotton yarn that is similar in color to jute, yet soft and easier to work with, and probably much more versatile for a bag as well.

Materials:
4 skeins Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn in Hay Bale
9mm M/N crochet hook

Notes:
Crochet with 2 strands held together.
Crochet rounds in a spiral; do not join rounds
Gauge: 12 stitches and 12 rows = 4 inches
Finished size: 15” x 15” with an 8” handle drop

Forming a ring:
Chain 4; join with a sl st into the first chain to form a ring. Chain 1.

Bottom:
Rnd 1: work 6 sc into the ring
Rnd 2: 2 sc into each stitch (12 stitches)
Rnd 3: *1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch* (repeat steps in*)
Rnd 4: *2 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 5: *3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 6: *4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 7: *5 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 8: *6 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 9: *7 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 10: *8 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 11: *9 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 12: *10 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 13: *11 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*
Rnd 14: *12 sc, 2 sc in next stitch*

Bag bottom should measure about 10” across

Body:
Rnd 15-49: sc in each stitch around in a spiral; do not join rounds

Rnd 50: Slip stitch in back loop only, all the way around

Handles:
Lay bag flat, and place a marker 12 stitches from each outer edge. Repeat on the other side of the bag (4 markers total, 2 on each side).

Beginning at the marker on the right, chain 60, being careful not to twist the chain, and sl st to attach the chain to the top of bag where left marker is.

Slip stitch in back loop only around the bag to the other side until you get to the next marker. Chain 60 and slip stitch to the bag where last marker is. Slip stitch in back loop only around to the beginning of the first handle.

Slip stitch in back loop only around the bag and handles two more rounds. Cut the yarn.

Rejoin yarn on the interior of a strap, close to the right side of the handle (see red arrow below). Slip stitch in back loop only across top of bag and the handle for one round (see yellow arrows below). Cut the yarn. Repeat for the other side/handle.

Secure and weave in all ends.
